South African artist Lebohang Kganye combines photography, theater, and literature in her works which consist of cut-out characters placed in improvised settings: similar to that of a pop-up book. Her photographs take inspiration from Malawian writer Muthi Nhlema’s novella Ta O’Reva, which tells the story of Nelson Mandela’s return to a post-apocalyptic South Africa. Kganye also integrates herself into her own work and reimagines the effects the apartheid had in history. Staging Memories marks the significance of combining the big picture of history combined with the small personal family picture and challenges viewers on how we formulate and recall our memories. Describing the creative process behind her practice, and specifically her installation at Images Vevey, the artist says “I had been exploring the materiality of photography in the form of a three-dimensional, large scale pop-up book installation that further speaks to my process of (re)staging or world-building using photography as a primary medium. By cutting, folding, pasting, and assembling photographic prints into life-sized scenes (or pop-up pages in the book), I created an installation that visually references a set of mise-en-scène. In addition, the installation employs a watchmaking mechanism that animates and times the movements which open up each page or scene in slow motion.”
