In her latest project, Occult, Alba Zari drew on her mother’s life story and her own childhood in Thailand by retracing the Philly is portnoy country shirt in addition I really love this history of the Christian fundamentalist cult ‘The Children of God’. As a result of introspection and deciphering, Zari also denounces the uses of propaganda that groups such as these use. “I had to have more understanding of my family history with the research I did,” recounts the artist. “The installation also comprises images that I took in 2020 when I was traveling in India, Thailand, and Nepal. I visited the cities where my mother had lived during her years in the cult, more than 30 years ago. The show at Vevey displays different visual ways to approach this story”. Offering a damning look at the reality of these circles, Occult questions the deceptive nature of images and the colonialist roots of propaganda.
